On Chinese Street
In this project, I decided to return to my home country, China, to take photos of people from a wide array of backgrounds and professions. After taking their portrait, I would ask them one question, “If you could live your life again, what would you change”? I combined portrait photography with interviews because I believe that portraits tell great stories; however, when we learn more details about the subject, it helps us to have a greater insight into their lives. Similarly, after looking at the portrait, the interview can provide a view from a different perspective. This project allowed me to travel and capture modern China, and to get to know different people. I traveled to five different cities: Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Macau, and Foshan. Each city has its own unique culture, and in speaking to people from various backgrounds it helped me to develop a greater understanding of the people of China; their professionals, their values, their lives. I interviewed hundreds of people, took thousands of pictures, and was rejected hundreds of times. Among the people I met were street cleaners, dock workers, students, white-collar workers, factory workers, a magazine founder, artists, and so on. While this project was often difficult, it was a worthwhile effort, and I learned a lot about myself and China throughout the process.

If I could live again, I would take those few years less seriously, because life does get better, even though I thought that was the end. I really like my job, because I am able to help people.
